Rio Hondo College starting pitcher Joe Wills achieved one of the rarest feats in baseball on Thursday. Wills struck out three batters in the first inning, but had to keep pitching thanks to a pair of passed balls. He went on to strike out two more to give him five for the inning on his way to 16 Ks in a 10-3 Foothill Conference loss at Chaffey College.

Baseball: Rio Hondo opens Foothill schedule with win over Victor Valley

Since starting the season 0-5, Rio Hondo College has started to heat up by winning five of its last seven games. On Tuesday, the Roadrunners opened Foothill Conference play with a 13-9 win at home over visiting Victor Valley College. Rio Hondo's third straight win improved its record to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

It wasn't the start of the season that Rio Hondo College head coach Mike Salazar was hoping for. Mt. San Antonio College rallied for a run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the visiting Roadrunners 5-4 in both teams' season opener at Mazmanian Field in Walnut on Saturday.
