Baseball: Rio Hondo records 3-2 walk-off win over Pasadena

Danny Marquez smacked a ninth-inning, lead-off double and came in to score the game-winning run on a sacrifice bunt and error off the bat of David Ornales as the Roadrunners picked up a 3-2 non-conference win over visiting Pasadena City College on Saturday in Whittier.

Rio Hondo has won back-to-back games for the first time season and improved its overall record to 4-7 while Pasadena fell to 5-4.

The Roadrunners jumped ahead early in the contest, scoring a pair of run in the bottom of the first inning. Jordan Abernathy came through in the clutch with a two-out, two-run double to score R.J. Romo and Mauricio Guadarrama to give Rio Hondo a 2-0 lead.

Rio Hondo starting pitcher Brady Carlson pitched well as he tossed seven scoreless innings. Carlson allowed just four hits and struck out six batters.

But Pasadena rallied for runs in the eighth and ninth innings to tie up the game and set the stage for the Roadrunners' win. Gabriel Juarez picked up the victory in relief for Rio Hondo as he recorded the final out in the top of the ninth with the potential go-ahead run on base for the Lancers.

Gabe Chavez and Fernando Rosales both went 2 for 4 to lead Rio Hondo at the plate.

Rio Hondo returns to action on Tuesday (Mar. 1) at 2 p.m. when the Roadrunners open Foothill Conference play at home against Victor Valley College.
