Baseball: Roadrunners drop home opener 4-2 to Glendale in 10 innings

The Rio Hondo College bats came alive as the Roadrunners banged out 10 hits in their home opener against Glendale College on Thursday. Unfortunately, Rio Hondo left 11 runners on base and lost 4-2 in 10 innings to the visiting Vaqueros.

Starting pitcher Joe Wills put together a quality outing for the Roadrunners as he allowed two runs (one earned) and five hits over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked just one.

Trailing 1-0, Rio Hondo scored both its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Gabe Chavez and Marcus Guadarrama led off with back-to-back singles before R.J. Romo drove in Chavez with a RBI single. Jordan Abernathy followed with a sacrifice to bring home Guadarrama and the Roadrunners were in front 2-1.

Glendale scored a run in the seventh to tie the game and got a two-run single from Cristian Montes in the 10th to plate the go-ahead runs.

Rio Hondo had runners on first and second with just one out in the bottom of the 10th, but Glendale reliever AJ Jimenez got Fernando Rosales to hit into a game-ending double play.

Romo went 3 for 5 to lead Rio Hondo at the plate while Guadarrama and Rosales both had two hits each.

Rio Hondo, now 0-2 overall, returns to action on Friday (Feb. 5) at 2 p.m. when the Roadrunners travel to Citrus College for a non-conference game.
