Baseball: Rio Hondo hangs on for 3-2 win at San Bernardino Valley

Rio Hondo College closed out a Foothill Conference series with a narrow 3-2 win at San Bernardino Valley College on Saturday. The Roadrunners took the series, winning two out of three games, to improve to 13-11 overall and 8-4 in conference play.

Cameron Legrand pitched well in just his second start of the season. He allowed two runs (one earned) run and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings to improve to 2-0. Legrand struck out five and walked just one. Anthony Franco earned his second save of the season as he allowed three hits over the final 2 2/3 innings to close out the victory.

Rio Hondo jumped ahead in the fourth inning. Jordan Abernathy led off with s single and moved to second base on a successful sacrifice bunt by Michael Hernandez. Fernando Rosales followed with a RBI double to score Abernathy and Randy Buenrostro brought him home with his run-scoring single.

The Roadrunners made it a 3-0 ball game with their final run in the seventh. Abernathy's sacrifice fly scored Gabe Chavez, who earlier led off the frame with a single.

San Bernardino Valley (15-11-1, 10-5 FC) came right back in the bottom of the seventh to score a pair of runs. And in the ninth, the Wolverines had the tying run at third base with two outs, but Franco got Jesus Gonzalez to fly out to end the ball game.

 Rio Hondo currently sits in third place in the Foothill Conference standings at 8-4, trailing first-place Chaffey College at 11-1 and SBVC  in second at 10-5. The Roadrunners begin a three-game conference series on Tuesday (Apr. 5) at 2:30 p.m. when they host Barstow College in the opener.
