Roadrunners close regular season with win at El Camino to finish second in SCC
TORRANCE – The Rio Hondo College women's tennis team wrapped up its regular-season schedule with a 7-2 win at El Camino College on Thursday. With the victory, the Roadrunners ended with a 3-3 South Coast Conference record to finish tied for second place in the final SCC standings.
"It was a great win," said Rio Hondo head coach Karen Unger. "We swept doubles and in singles won both third-set super tiebreakers.
Rio Hondo went 2-0 against El Camino during the season. On Thursday, the Roadrunners opened the match by winning all three doubles matches. The No. 1 duo of Lana Young and Abigail Madrigal won 8-2, No. 2 Makayla Glover and Sophia Chavez took their match 8-4, and the No. 3 squad of Jennifer Diaz and Kaitlyn Dominguez came away with an 8-5 triumph.
The Roadrunners closed the day winning four of six singles matches. Picking up wins were Madrigal at No. 2 (3-6, 6-4, 10-7), Diaz at No. 4 (6-7, 6-3, 10-3), Glover at No. 5 (6-4, 6-2), and Mayumi Lemus at No. 6 (6-1, 6-0).
Rio Hondo closed with a 3-7 overall record and will now focus on the South Coast Conference Championships. The SCC tournament is set for April 1 and 4 at Mt. San Antonio College. The Roadrunners will look to perform well at the conference tournament in order to qualify for the 3C2A State Championships.
According to Unger, she feels a pair of her doubles squads as well two singles players could earn spots in the state tourney. The state championships get underway on April 24 at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club.
