Women’s Tennis: Roadrunners wrap up season at State Championships

The 2019 Rio Hondo College tennis season came to a close at the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Tennis State Championships in Ojai. The Roadrunners were represented by sophomore Jane Quach and freshman Jesielle Valles in singles competition as well as three doubles teams at the state tournament.

Quach suffered a three-set loss to Palia Griffin of San Diego City College in her opening-round match. Quach took the first set before dropping the final, losing 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Valles also suffered a first-round defeat, dropping a 6-0, 6-2 match to Natalie Shunnarah of Imperial Valley College.

In doubles, Quach and Valles teamed up and lost in a marathon three-set match in the first round. After splitting the first two sets 6-2, 2-6, the Southwestern College duo of Sabrina San Vicente and Irish Valentos-Krishina outlasted the Rio Hondo team 15-13 in Set 3.

The doubles squad of freshmen Heaven Diaz and Gabriella Tellez picked up the Roadrunners' lone win of the tourney. The beat San Diego City's Alayna Abellana and Estefania Lemus 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. But facing the No. 4-seeded team of Molly Amico and Lisa Le of Fresno City College, Diaz and Tellez lost 6-0, 6-2 to close their run.

Rounding out the Roadrunners at state, the freshmen team of Samantha Garcia and Samantha Martinez dropped their opening-round match 6-1, 6-1 to Hannah Dinkins and Salima Prasad of Cosumnes River College.

Prior to the state championships, Rio Hondo wrapped up team play with a 4-7 overall record and finished second in the South Coast Conference at 2-4.
