Women’s Soccer: Rio Hondo captures 11 All-SCC North postseason honors

It was another successful season for the Rio Hondo College women's soccer team in 2018. After capturing their second consecutive South Coast Conference North Division championship, the Roadrunners swept the conference's top three awards and totaled 11 postseason honors.

Leading the way were sophomore Madison Mader and Isabel Garay. Mader led the SCC North with 12 assists and scored 12 goals on her way to being named the Offensive Player of the Year. Garay, a leader on the Roadrunners' back line, helped anchor a defense that allowed 0.79 goals per game and totaled eight shutouts.

Last season as a freshman, Mader was honored as the SCC North Defensive Player of the Year.

Also bringing home top honors was Rio Hondo head coach Jennifer Tanaka-Hoshijo. She was named the SCC North Coach of the Year. It was Tanaka-Hoshijo's second time taking home top coaching honors after being named the Foothill Conference Coach of the Year in 2015.

Rio Hondo had four earn first-team All-SCC North Division honors. The list includes sophomore midfielder Emma Contreras, freshman midfielder Stephanie Arreola, freshman defender Marissa Morales, and sophomore forward Samantha Garcia.

The Roadrunners also had four second-team selections, including freshman defender Viviana Ramirez, sophomore defender Ingrid Castillo, freshman goalkeeper Izella Delgadillo, and freshman midfielder April Garcia.

Rio Hondo, seeded third for the postseason, closed the year with a 15-4-2 overall record. Despite the abrupt end to the season after a narrow 1-0 loss to No. 6 Santiago Canyon College in the second round of the playoffs, it was another impressive effort for Tanaka-Hoshijo and her Roadrunners.

Rio Hondo went a perfect 8-0 in North Division play to capture its second consecutive South Coast Conference title. The conference championship was the fourth straight for the Roadrunners after winning their first-ever SCC North title last year as well as consecutive Foothill Conference championships in 2014 and 2015.
