Women’s Soccer: Rio Hondo wraps up second straight SCC North title

The Rio Hondo College Roadrunners are South Coast Conference North Division champions for the second consecutive season thanks to their 3-1 victory at Mt. San Antonio College on Friday.

The Roadrunners are peaking at the right time. Rio Hondo has won 10 or their last 11 games, including four straight, to improve to 13-3-1 overall. Just two games remain on the regular-season schedule before Southern California Regional Playoffs begin on Nov. 18.

At Mt. SAC, three different Roadrunners scored. Stephanie Arreola gave Rio Hondo a 1-0 lead with her goal in the 26th minute. Just moments before the end of the half, April Garcia scored in the 42nd minute and Breanna Alvarado all but sealed the victory with her goal in the 44th minute.

Madison Mader was credited with assists on the Arreola and Alvarado goals while Isabel Garay earn the assist to Garcia. Izella Delgadillo earned the win in goal for the Roadrunners.

With the title, Rio Hondo has secured an automatic bid into the SoCal playoffs. The conference championship is the fourth straight for the Roadrunners and head coach Jennifer Tanaka-Hoshijo after winning their first-ever SCC North title last year as well as consecutive Foothill Conference championships in 2014 and 2015.

Rio Hondo next plays at Long Beach City College on Tuesday (Nov. 7) in a SCC interdivision game and closes the regular season at home against Pasadena City College next Friday (Nov. 10) in their final SCC North Division contest.
