Valencia’s record-tying 11th three-pointer at the buzzer lifts Rio Hondo to win
LOS ANGELES – A storm is scheduled to hit the Southland this weekend but on Wednesday night, it was Rio Hondo College freshman Alexia Valencia that was raining down threes.
Valencia tied the program's single-game record with 11 three-pointers, the final one coming at the buzzer, to help the Roadrunners come-from-behind to win at Los Angeles Trade-Tech College by a final score of 83-80.
Valencia ended the contest with a season-high 35 points as she made 11 of 20 shots from three-point range while adding a two-point basket and a pair of free throws.
After a big third quarter by Trade-Tech, the Roadrunners went into the final period trailing by 10 points, 60-50. But Valencia caught fire in the fourth, going a perfect 5 for 5 from downtown for 15 points while the Roadrunners went on to outscore the Beavers 33-20 to pull out the victory.
Jaden Hill-Massarotti also had a big game, contributing 26 points and 8 assists towards the win while Hesma Valdes totaled 12 points and 7 rebounds.
Rio Hondo has won four of its last six games to improve to 11-13 overall as well as 2-2 in the South Coast Conference North Division. The Roadrunners will look to keep the momentum going on Friday (Feb. 7) when they travel to Mt. San Antonio College for a 5 p.m. game.
