Women’s Basketball: Morales 29 points leads Rio Hondo at Glendale Crossover

Rio Hondo College sophomore Jennyfer Morales posted a career-high 29 points to lead the Roadrunners in a 62-55 loss to host Glendale Community College on Saturday in the final day of action at the Glendale Crossover tournament. Rio Hondo had a tough weekend at the two-day event and also suffered a 78-67 loss to College of the Canyons on Friday.

Morales did all she could to keep the Roadrunners in the game vs. Glendale. The two squads were tied 29-29 at halftime before an eight-point third quarter by Rio Hondo would prove to be the difference in the loss.

Morales sank 6 three-pointers as part of a 10 for 26 night shooting. She also grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds.

Jiselle Cabrera added 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists while Rosalie Avalos totaled 7 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals.

The Roadrunners played a solid game against Canyons on Friday before faltering late in the fourth quarter. Rio Hondo led 58-57 with 9:27 to play in the fourth after Denise Jimienz' layup. But an 8-2 run by the Cougars put them ahead for good as Rio Hondo was outscored 21-11 over the final period.

Avalos led Rio Hondo with 20 points and added 5 rebounds. Morales nearly had a double-double with 9 points and 10 rebounds. Cabrera came off the bench to score 15 points and Pearl Acosta chipped in with 9 points.

The Roadrunners fell to 5-9 overall and return to action on Dec. 29 when they will compete at the two-day Antelope Valley College Holiday Crossover tournament. Rio Hondo is scheduled to play host AVC at 5 p.m. on Wednesday and faces Mt. San Jacinto College at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
