The Rio Hondo College women's basketball team wrapped up its opening weekend of the 2021-22 season with a pair of losses at the Mt. San Antonio College Linda G. Smith Memorial Tip-Off Classic in Walnut.
The weekend started off well for the Roadrunners as they cruised to a 74-35 win over Barstow Community College on Friday. But Rio Hondo ran into a pair of strong teams, falling to Sierra College 60-41 in the tourney semifinals on Saturday and losing to Citrus College 72-52 in the third-place game.
Rio Hondo had a tough time shooting the ball against Sierra as the Roadrunners made just 12 of 58 shots in the contest. Sophomore Jennyfer Morales had a standout game, posting 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals. Michelle Rachmat came off the bench to add 8 points and 5 rebounds.
A close game at halftime against Citrus quickly went south for the Roadrunners. Rio Hondo trailed Citrus 25-21 at the break but Citrus went on to outscore the Roadrunners 24-3 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Morales once again led Rio Hondo, this time pouring in a career-high 22 points in the loss. She added 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.
Rosalie Avalos chipped in with 8 points and Donteylor Maxwell added 7 points.
Rio Hondo, 1-2 overall, returns to action on Thursday (Nov. 11) at 5 p.m. when the Roadrunners take on Ohlone College at the three-day Earn Our Stripes Tournament at Riverside City College.
