SAN BERNARDINO – The Rio Hondo College offense came alive late to take Game 2 of its softball opening-day doubleheader at San Bernardino Valley College by a final score of 18-12 on Friday. The victory came after the Roadrunners dropped a 5-2 game in the opener.
Trailing 6-4 after three innings in Game 2, the Roadrunners went on to score 14 runs over the final four frames to cruise to the win.
Sayuri Marquez led the charge as she totaled 6 RBI after going 3 for 6 at the plate. She smacked a two-run double in the second and had two-run singles in the sixth and seventh innings as part of a pair of five-run rallies.
Alexia Mayorga, Alona Sanchez, and Gisselle Ramirez-Huerta also drove in two runs each.
Runs were hard to come by for Rio Hondo in Game 1. Mayorga was impressive in the season-opener, going a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate while Marquez was 2 for 4 with an RBI-single in the sixth.
Rio Hondo made its return to the field for the first time since the 2023 season after the program was suspended last year.
The Roadrunners, now 1-1 overall, are back in action on Tuesday (Jan 28) when they host Glendale Community College in their home opener at 2:30 p.m.
