Samantha David and Alyssa Medrano drove in two runs while Miranda Fernandez had three hits to help lead Rio Hondo College to a 7-2 non-conference win over visiting Golden West College on Friday in Whittier.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Roadrunners and improved their overall record to 7-26-1.
Golden West got on the scoreboard first, getting a run off Rio Hondo starter Medline Peralta in the top of the third inning. But the Roadrunners responded with a big four-run rally in the bottom of the third to go ahead for good. Arianna Amezcua walked with the bases loaded to force in a run, Medrano smacked a two-run single, and Amber Gutierrez hit a RBI single to give the Roadrunners a 4-1 lead.
The Rustlers added a run in the top of the fifth but again, Rio Hondo came right back to extend its lead. David laced a two-run single and Fernandez capped the three-run surge with a RBI single of her own.
Peralta earned the win in the impressive complete-game effort from the circle. She scattered seven hits and allowed two runs (one earned) while striking out six.
Fernandez went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Rio Hondo while David and Gutierrez both went 2-for-3.
Rio Hondo returns to action on Tuesday (Apr. 16) at 3 p.m. when the Roadrunners host Mt. San Antonio College in a South Coast Conference North Division game.
