Softball: Rio Hondo blanked in home opener

It was a home opener that the Rio Hondo College softball team will quickly like to forget. Home field in Whittier wasn't so kind as the Roadrunners couldn't scrape together a hit and suffered an 8-0, five-inning loss to visiting Orange Coast College on Tuesday.

Rio Hondo had base runners reach via walks during the first four innings of the game but couldn't get much else going offensively against OCC pitcher Bronwyn Jarvis. She went the distance and struck out two.

Aspen Gonzalez walked twice while Miranda Fernandez and Samantha David took a free pass on base as well.

Orange Coast took advantage of four Rio Hondo errors, including a wild pitch in the top of the first that allowed the Pirates to score three runs. OCC put up a run in the second, two runs in the third, and two final runs in the fourth.

Madeline Peralta took the loss after allowing four earned runs and four hits over the opening 2 1/3 innings. Arianna Amezcua tossed the final 2 2/3 innings, giving up two earned runs and three hits.

Rio Hondo, now 1-3-1, returns to action on Friday (Feb. 1) when it hosts Golden West College at 10 a.m. and San Diego Mesa College at 2 p.m. in a three-way doubleheader.
