Softball: Roadrunners drop SCC crossover contest to Compton

Rio Hondo College rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to deny visiting Compton College a mercy-rule win, but still fell by a final score of 12-3 in a South Coast Conference interdivision game in Whittier on Tuesday.

The loss dropped the Roadrunners to 3-9-1 overall. They travel to Cerritos College next for another conference crossover game on Thursday (Feb. 15) at 3 p.m. before opening SCC North Division play next Tuesday (Feb. 20) at Chaffey College.

Compton scored a pair of runs of Rio Hondo starter Taylor Rodriguez in the top of the first inning before she settled down to toss consecutive scoreless innings in the second and third.

The Tartars scored a single run in the fourth before blowing the game open with four runs in the fifth. They scored again in the top of the sixth to go up 8-0 before the Roadrunners staved off the mercy-run rule by scoring three times in the bottom of the sixth.

Samantha David hit a sac fly to bring home Taylor Alcala before Maria Enriquez delivered the biggest blow of the game for Rio Hondo. She smacked a two-run double that scored Rodriguez and Sarah Hauffen-Salgado.

Rodriguez took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) and four hits over 4 2/3 innings. She struck out four and walked two.
