Softball: Martinez strikes out seven in five-inning win over Victor Valley

Rio Hondo College freshman Brenae Martinez earned her second straight victory over Victor Valley College as the Roadrunners beat the Rams 9-1 in a mercy-rule, five-inning game. The Foothill Conference victory improved Rio Hondo to 8-17 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Coming off an eight strikeout win over VVC on Mar. 11, Martinez totaled seven strikeouts and allowed just three hits on Monday.

The Roadrunners scored single runs in the first and second innings before blowing the game open with four runs in the third. Rio Hondo earned the walk-off win by scoring three runs in the fifth to put into effect the eight-run mercy rule.

Esthefany Martinez went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, a stolen base and two runs to lead the Roadrunners' offense while Elaine Verdugo also drove in two runs.

Rio Hondo returns to action on Wednesday (Mar. 23) at 3 p.m. when the Roadrunners host San Bernardino Valley College in a conference game.
