Rio Hondo College split its Foothill Conference-opening doubleheader on Friday at San Bernardino Valley College. The Roadrunners opened the afternoon with a 3-0 loss but then bounced back leave with a 5-3 victory over the Wolverines.

The win snapped the Roadrunners 10-game losing streak and improved their record to 4-13 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Game 1: SBVC 3, RHC 0

The Roadrunners couldn't get much going offensively as they totaled just three hits against San Bernardino Valley pitcher Terilyn Baude in the opener. Krystal Vega went 2 for 2 on the afternoon to lead Rio Hondo at the plate.

Brenae Martinez pitched well despite earning the loss. She allowed just one earned run and five hits in the complete-game effort. SBVC took advantage of two Rio Hondo errors to score runs.

Game 2: RHC 5, SBVC 3

Rio Hondo jumped on Baude early, scoring three runs in the top of the first to set the tone in the victory. Esthefany Martinez and Nadiya Lozano scored thanks to a pair of SBVC errors before Mylene Valencia smacked a RBI single to bring home Julianna Fierro.

Valencia got her second RBI of the game when her ground out scored Lozano in the third.

The Wolverines rallied for three runs in the fifth to cut the Roadrunners' lead to 4-3 but Rio Hondo added an insurance run in the seventh after Martinez came in to score on another SBVC error.

Brenae Martinez allowed a one-out single in the seventh, but retired the next two batters to close out the complete-game victory. She allowed three runs and seven hits for the win.

Esthefany Martinez went 2 for 2 to lead Rio Hondo at the plate.

San Bernardino Valley (5-13, 1-1 FC) made five errors in the loss.

Rio Hondo returns to action on Monday (Feb. 29) at 3 p.m. when the Roadrunners travel to Santa Ana College for a non-conference game.
