Rio Hondo College freshman Brenae Martinez earned her first shutout of the season as the Roadrunners cruised to a 6-0 non-conference win at San Diego City College on Wednesday. With the win, Rio Hondo evened its record at 3-3 overall.
Martinez turned in her finest outing of the season as she scattered six hits over seven innings and struck out three.
Rio Hondo got all the offense it would need in the top of the third inning as the Roadrunners sent 10 batters to the plate and rallied for six runs. Nadiya Lozano delivered the biggest hit of the game, a bases-clearing double, to close out the big rally. Faith Hernandez had a RBI single, Brittany Salcido forced in a run after she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Gabrielle Salavdor's fielder's choice brought home another run.
Hernandez and Mylene Valencia both had two hits to lead Rio Hondo at the plate. The Rio Hondo defense also had its best game of the young season, playing error-less ball for the first time in six games.
The Roadrunners are back in action this Saturday (Feb. 6) at Cypress College. Rio Hondo will face Cypress at 10:30 a.m. followed by a 12:30 p.m. contest against College of the Canyons.
