Men's Water Polo: Rio Hondo beats LA Trade-Tech 17-11 for first win

Kent Mertins scored four goals while goalie Nathan Paez totaled 10 saves to help lead the Rio Hondo College men's water polo team to its first win of the season, a 17-10 South Coast Conference victory at Los Angeles Trade-Tech College on Wednesday.

Its been a rough start to the 2016 season for the Roadrunners after dropping their first 11 contests. Now 1-11 overall and 1-3 in conference play, Rio Hondo looks to continue the winning streak on Friday (Sept. 30) at the Cerritos College Mini Tournament.

In Wednesday's win, Rio Hondo exploded for a season-high 17 goals after scoring just one goal over their last two games.

Outside of Mertins outburst, the Roadrunners got three goals each from Brian Barthelmess, Asatur Marzvanian, and Walter Hochstrasser. Anthony Najar chipped in with two goals, an assist, and had three of the Roadrunners 11 steals in the game. Jeremy Foster and Cole Mumma added one goal each.

Following Friday's tournament action, Rio Hondo returns to South Coast Conference play on Monday (Oct. 3) at Chaffey College.
