Swim & Dive: Impressive weekend by Dimitriadas leads Rio Hondo at SCC Championships

NORWALK – Rio Hondo College's Xander Dimitriadas had a huge weekend in the pool for the Roadrunners at the South Coast Conference Championships. The freshman out of Esperanza High School was named the SCC Male Swimmer of the Meet after capturing three individual conference titles while also swimming to impressive times in a pair of relays.

Dimitriadas totaled 80 points towards the Roadrunners' team score of 429 points, good for fifth place out of seven teams at the conference finals. The Rio Hondo women's squad also finished in fifth place out of eight teams with a score of 257.5 points.

Highlights for Dimitriadas included:
*200 IM SCC Champion 1:54.86; 5th fastest in state; state qualifying time
*400 IM SCC Champion 4:07.31; 7th fastest in the state; state qualifying time
*200 Breast SCC Champion; 2:06.67; 7th fastest in the state; state qualifying time

In the relays:
*200 Free 1:34.50; fastest time in the SCC conference; 5th fastest in the state; state qualifying time
*100 Free 47.37; 2nd fastest time in the SCC; 25th fastest in the state

According to men's head coach Stephen Smith, Dimitriadas' times are all tops marks since his coaching tenure began in 2016 and could like be school records as well.

Smith also pointed out impressive finishes by the following men:

Steven Perez finished top 8 in all his events including:
*200 Free 1:52.39; 6th in SCC,
*1650 Free 17:47.53; 5th in SCC; fastest time in Smith era as head coach
*200 Breast 2:21.75; 5th fastest in the SCC

Kaloni Cabreana: 200 Fly 2:12.52; 7th in SCC; fastest time in Smith era

Aaron Ayala: 100 Back 1:06.06 6th in SCC

For the Rio Hondo women, Ariel Noriega and Isabella Carney both earned 24 points each towards the team standings to lead the Roadrunners.

The duo's top finish came in the 1-meter diving event. Noriega was third with her score of 90.45 points while Carney finished in fifth place at 68.65 points.

Valentina Orozco totaled 22 points, as she earned a pair of 10th place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (1:14.60) and 200 back (2:44.28).

Other top individual finishes for the women included Isabella Ayala in the 100 fly (9th, 1:39.01), Cecilia Fontoura in the 200 fly (10th, 3:27.63), Aliza Montenegro in the 100 fly (6th, 1:25.99), and Jeweli Steppe in the 400 IM (10th, 6:17.23).

Up next for the Roadrunners in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championships on May 5-7 at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park.
