Men’s Swim/Dive: Augustine captures 1-meter dive state championship

A day after earning a second-place finish in the 3-meter dive event, Rio Hondo College freshman Aaron Augustine put together an even greater performance, totaling 287.50 points to win the 1-meter dive at the 2019 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Swimming & Diving State Championships at DeAnza College in Cupertino on Friday.

Augustine spoiled what would have been two straight years of double diving titles by San Joaquin Delta's Josh Hamby with huge scores on his last two dives. On his second to last dive, he used a Forward 1-1/2 Somersault with 1 Twist to pick up an 8.5 and an 8 from two of the judges and 7s from four others. He scored two more 8s on his winning Back 1-1/2 SS, 1-1/2 Twists with only one judge scoring lower than 7.5.

Thanks to his first-place finish in the 1-meter dive and second-place showing in the 3-meter dive, Augustine was named State Co-Swimmer of the Year, sharing the honor with Hamby. 

Thanks to his first and second-place showing at the state championships, Augustine secured All-American status in both events. Augustine also captured the Southern California and South Coast Conference championships in both the 3-meter and 1-meter dive on his way to being named the SCC Diver of the Year. Rio Hondo assistant coach Charly Collins was named the State and SCC Diving Coach of the Year.
