Thanks to its 5-0 rout over West Hills College Lemoore on Sunday, Rio Hondo College took home the championship cup from the 2017 Mt. SAC/Adidas/Azteca Soccer Tournament. The win came after the Roadrunners rallied to beat Fullerton College in their tourney opener on Friday.

Sophomore Carlos Zarate led Rio Hondo in the championship victory, as he netted a pair of goals and added an assist. His goal in the 13th minute got the Roadrunners on the board and assisted on Fernando Guerrero's score in the 24th minute that gave Rio Hondo a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Zarate added to the lead in the 51st minute with his second goal before Mauricio Sanchez and Roman Delgado also got in on the scoring action to close out the win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jose Paredes needed to make just one save to help lead the Roadrunners to their second shutout of the season.

Rio Hondo, now 3-1 overall, returns to non-conference action on Wednesday (Sep. 6) when the Roadrunners travel to Orange Coast College.
