120 minutes of soccer wasn't enough to decide the winner between No. 5 Rio Hondo College and No. 12 Los Angeles Mission College in the opening-round of the 2016 Southern California Regional Playoffs. But it was the home-team Roadrunners that prevailed 6-5 in penalty kicks to punch their ticket to the next round.

Early in regulation, Antonio Villegas got Rio Hondo on the board first with his goal off the assist from Carlos Jimenez in the 19th minute. LA Mission (8-10-4) went on to tie the game at 1-1 in the 36th minute with a goal by Carlos Solorio. That would prove to be the final score for the rest of the game.

Jose Paredes made six saves in goal for Rio Hondo to help lead the Roadrunners to the win.

Rio Hondo, now 9-4-9 overall, moves on to face No. 4 Irvine Valley College in a second-round game on Tuesday (Nov. 26). Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. in Irvine. The winner of that contest will take on either No. 1 Mt. San Antonio or No. 8 San Diego City in a third-round game on Saturday (Nov. 26).
