Men's Soccer: Rio Hondo edges East LA 1-0 to open SCC play

With the clock winding down in the second half of Rio Hondo College's South Coast Conference opener at East Los Angeles College on Friday night, freshman Angel Flores turned a likely draw between the two squads into a Roadrunners' victory with a late goal as Rio Hondo picked up a 1-0 win.

In the 88th minute, Antonio Villegas and Jesus Garcia combined for the pass to Flores as he finished the scoring opportunity by beating ELAC goalkeeper Ivan Barranco for the game-winning goal.

Rio Hondo and East Los Angeles both totaled eight shots on goal in the contest, but the Roadrunners' Jose Paredes posted the shutout in front of the net with eight saves. It was Rio Hondo's fifth shutout of the season.

Barranco had seven saves for the Huskies, as East Los Angeles fell to 1-5-4 overall and 0-1-0 in SCC North Division play.

With the win, Rio Hondo improved to 5-2-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the SCC North. The Roadrunners have lost just once over their last seven games and look to continue the momentum on Tuesday (Oct. 4) when they host Pasadena City College in a 6 p.m. conference match.
