Men’s Basketball: Roadrunners edged at Canyons 74-68

Freshman Shymar Wiggins totaled 18 points and 9 rebounds to lead Rio Hondo College in a tough 74-68 loss at College of the Canyons on Saturday in Valencia.

The Roadrunners battled, but in the end came up just short. Rio Hondo trailed by one (29-28) heading into halftime and anytime it put together a run in the second, Canyons responded.

Down 69-60 with one minute to play, Rio Hondo put together a 7-0 run. Chris Herrera nailed a three-pointer, George Ashley snuck in for a layup, and Sebastian Lara's jumper with 30 seconds remaining got the Roadrunners within two points at 69-67. But Canyons was able to convert 5 of 6 free throws over the final stretch to hang on for the win.

Lara posted 17 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Herrera sank 5 three-pointers on his way to 15 points. He also had 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Ashley contributed 10 points and 5 assists.

Rio Hondo, now 1-13 overall, returns to action on Wednesday (Dec. 15) at 6 p.m. when the Roadrunners host San Diego Mesa College in a non-conference game.
