Men's Basketball: Legaspy, Roadrunners steal 71-68 win at Desert

Freshman Carlos Legaspy's steal and three-pointer at the buzzer lifted Rio Hondo College to an amazing 71-68 Foothill Conference win at College of the Desert on Wednesday night. The victory improved Rio Hondo to 10-17 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

Trailing by two points, sophomore Justin Elliot's layup with four seconds left in regulation tied up the game. With time running down on the ensuing inbounds, Legaspy stole the ball from Donovan Wilson and launched a desperation shot from five feet beyond the three-point line and nailed it to set off the Rio Hondo celebration.

Wednesday's contest was tight from start to finish. The two squads exchanged leads nine times and were tied on 13 occasions. Rio Hondo held a narrow 31-30 advantage at halftime.

Legaspy had a good game off the bench for the Roadrunners as he chipped in with 12 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Sophomore Juaquin Zavala led Rio Hondo with 17 points while Elliot and sophomore Preston Sachs both had double-doubles. Elliot was one assist away from a triple-double and posted 11 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists. Sachs had a massive game on the boards with 17 rebounds to go with 10 points.

Gabe Solache led Desert (5-20, 2-8 FC) with 16 points.

Rio Hondo returns to action on Wednesday (Feb. 17) at 5 p.m. when the Roadrunners travel to Victor Valley College for a Foothill Conference game.
