Sophomore guard Justin Elliott scored a team-high 19 points and had seven assists in an 81-67 Rio Hondo College loss to No. 6 state-ranked Chaffey College on Saturday in Whittier. The Foothill Conference defeat dropped the Roadrunners to 9-17 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

Rio Hondo couldn't contain the high-flying Chaffey offense. The Panthers jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and never looked back. Chaffey was up 44-26 at halftime and led by as many as 24 points in the second.

Head coach Mike Lowe can take pride in the fact that Rio Hondo committed just eight turnovers for the contest and made 17 of 24 free throws.

Sophomores Juaquin Zavala and Preston Sachs both chipped in with 12 points while freshman Angelo Sandoval came off the bench to score nine points and grab seven rebounds.

Victor Joseph and Donavan Taylor both scored 29 points to lead Chaffey (20-5, 7-0 FC).

Rio Hondo returns to action on Wednesday (Feb. 10) at 5 p.m. when the Roadrunners travel to College of the Desert for a Foothill Conference game.
