Roadrunners can't hold second-half lead, fall 88-68 at SBVC

Rio Hondo College sophomore Leo Maidana scored a team-high 21 points and grabbed six rebounds in an 88-68 Foothill Conference loss at San Bernardino Valley College on Wednesday night. The defeat dropped the Roadrunners to 8-16 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

San Bernardino Valley (23-3, 4-1 FC) opened the contest with a 10-0 lead before Rio Hondo slowly chipped away. Myles Jackson's three-pointer at the 1:01 mark in the first half got the Roadrunners within two points before Brandon Jolley jumper with 40 seconds left sent SBVC into the break with a 40-36 advantage.

Rio Hondo opened the second scoring the first six points, including four from Maidana, to jump ahead 42-40. Maidana's free throw at 15:02 in the second gave the Roadrunners their final lead of the contest at 45-44 before San Bernardino Valley countered with a 14-3 run over the next five minutes to put the game out of reach.

For the Roadrunners, sophomore Justin Elliott added 16 points, five assists, and four steals while freshman Carlos Legaspy came off the bench to score nine points.

Rio Hondo returns to action next Wednesday (Feb. 3) when it hosts Barstow College in a 5 p.m. Foothill Conference game. The doubleheader with the women's team will also be played as part of Coaches vs. Cancer Suit & Sneakers Night.
