Team Stats
WHITTIER – Matthew Leyva turned in a solid start, allowing 2 runs over 8 innings on his way to helping lead Rio Hondo College to a 6-4 win over visiting East Los Angeles College on Tuesday in the opening game of a three-game South Coast Conference series.
Leyva scattered 9 hits and struck out 7 batters while earning the win on the mound. He moved his overall record to 2-7 this season.
On offense, the Roadrunners played small ball as they collected 13 singles in the contest. Dylan Slayton (2 for 3), Marcus Hernandez (2 for 4, RBI), Matt Covarrubias (2 for 5, RBI), and Diego Helguera (2 for 4, RBI) all had 2 hits each.
The win improved Rio Hondo to 5-22 overall and 3-10 in South Coast Conference play. The Roadrunners and Huskies continue the series on Thursday (Mar. 27) in Monterey Park at 2 p.m. with Saturday's finale set for noon back in Whittier.
