WHITTIER – A tough 2025 Rio Hondo College baseball season continued on Tuesday as the Roadrunners dropped the opener of a three-game South Coast Conference series against SCC-leading Mt. San Antonio College by a final score of 10-3.
A five-run, third-inning rally by Mt. SAC (18-3, 7-0 SCC) put the Roadrunners in a hole that they couldn't come back from.
The Mounties took a 10-0 lead into the eighth inning before the Roadrunners rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. David Castillo and Owen Zingel both hit RBI-doubles to drive in runs.
Castillo picked up his second RBI of the contest in the ninth as he walked with the bases loaded to force in a run.
Josh Zarate went 2 for 4 and scored a run to lead the Roadrunners at the plate.
The loss dropped Rio Hondo to 4-18 overall and 2-8 in conference play. The SCC series continues on Thursday (Mar. 13 with Game 2 at Mt. SAC. Game time is 4 p.m. The set concludes on Saturday (Mar. 15) with the finale back in Whittier at 12 p.m.
