WHITTIER – The 2025 Rio Hondo College baseball season got off to an impressive start as the Roadrunners cruised to a 13-3 opening-day victory at home over visiting Imperial Valley College on Friday afternoon at The Jungle.
The Rio Hondo offense banged out 15 hits, led by a perfect 4 for 4 day at the plate from Anthony Guzman. He smacked 4 singles, scored a pair of runs, and totaled 4 RBI. Wes Pendleton was also solid in the opener, going 3 for 4 with a double, and 3 RBI.
Opening-day starter Matthew Leyva earned the win after allowing a pair of runs (1 earned) in the first inning. He went on to toss 4 scoreless innings, allowed just 4 hits, and struck out 5 batters.
Ryan Ash picked up the four-inning save after giving up a run and 2 hits to close it out.
Rio Hondo (1-0) and Imperial Valley (0-1) will close out the opening-weekend series on Saturday (Jan. 25) in Whittier at 12 p.m.
