Baseball: Roadrunners suffer first loss, fall 10-0 to Mesa

Rio Hondo College had its three-game winning streak to open the 2019 season come to an end on Thursday as the Roadrunners lost by a final score of 10-0 to visiting San Diego Mesa College.

Rio Hondo managed just five hits in the contest, getting four off Mesa starting pitcher Jacob Casson. The Roadrunners had their chances but left 11 runners on base. Rio Hondo stranded a pair of runners in the first and fourth innings and left the bases full in the ninth.

Diego Perez had a single and two walks to lead Rio Hondo at the plate.

R.J. Van Kampen took the loss despite a solid starting effort. He allowed a run and two hits over 2 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Josh Yorba and Christian Trujillo pitched well in relief, both tossing scoreless innings.

Casson picked up the win for Mesa (2-3) after holding Rio Hondo scoreless for four innings with five strikeouts.

Rio Hondo will look to bounce back on Friday (Feb. 8) when the Roadrunners travel to College of the Canyons for a 10 a.m. game. Then on Saturday (Feb. 9) at 2 p.m., Rio Hondo will take on Allan Hancock College with the game also scheduled to be played at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita.
