Beach Volleyball: Rio Hondo splits matches vs. Victor Valley, Long Beach

The Rio Hondo College beach volleyball team went 1-1 on the day at the Granada Beach courts in Long Beach on Friday, beating Victor Valley College after dropping a 5-0 South Coast Conference match to Long Beach City College.

The Rio Hondo College beach volleyball team went 1-1 on the day at the Granada Beach courts in Long Beach on Friday, beating Victor Valley College 5-0 after dropping a 5-0 South Coast Conference match to Long Beach City College.

Rio Hondo moved to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Roadrunners return to action next Friday (Mar. 13) at 10 a.m. when they take on El Camino College and Wayne State College of Nebraska at ECC.

The Roadrunners had a relatively easy time beating VVC on Friday as they won all four matches that were played in straight sets while winning the No. 5 match by forfeit. The No. 3 Rio Hondo duo of Katherina O'Brien and Jocelyn Abad allowed just six points, winning 21-4, 21-2.

The South Coast Conference opener against Long Beach was much closer than the final score of 5-0 would indicate. Four of the five contests went to three sets, unfortunately the Roadrunners couldn't pull out any victories.

The No. 2 squad of Mara Sanchez and Stephanie Garcia had the best shot at a win, pushing the LBCC team of Shelby Cole and Celeste Ropati to a 16-14 decision in Set 3 after the Rio Hondo duo won the opener 21-19 and the Vikings took the second set 21-18.
