Wrestling: Roadrunners finish fourth at Cuesta tournament

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Led by first-place individual finishes by Devin Martinez and Dylan Atherton, Rio Hondo College totaled 145 points to finish in fourth place out of 18 teams at the Meathead Movers Invitational on Saturday. The 20th annual event was hosted by Cuesta College.

Martinez dominated the competition at the 133-pounds weight class on his way to the championship. He went a perfect 4-0, winning every match by fall. Martinez pinned Bakersfield's Derek Alcantar in 2:39 in the final.

For his efforts, Martinez was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament.

Atherton nearly matches Martinez' feat. He went 5-0 on the day, recording three pins, a major decision, and earned a technical fall (18-2) over Dakota Sanders of Cosumnes River in the 125-pound final. Atherton was awarded the Outstanding Lower Weight of the Tournament trophy.

Also placing for the Roadrunners were Jacob Benavides in third at 125, Finn Long in third at 144, and Anthony Incantalupo sixth at 197.

Rio Hondo returns to dual action on Wednesday (Oct. 25) when the Roadrunners host Palomar in a 7 p.m. conference match.
