Men’s Soccer: Roadrunners advance after thrilling PK win over Santa Monica

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PLAYOFFS BRACKET

SANTA MONICA – 120 minutes of soccer wasn't enough to decide a winner between No. 13 seed Rio Hondo College and No. 4 Santa Monica College in their opening-round game of the Southern California Regional Playoffs on Saturday at SMC.

After the two squads officially played to a 3-3 draw, the Roadrunners were able to come out on top of the deciding penalty kick shootout by a final score of 5-4. Rio Hondo goalkeeper Diego Bastias' save on Santa Monica's final attempt set off the Roadrunners' celebration and sent them to the next round of the playoffs.

After the upset, Rio Hondo now travels to No. 12 Antelope Valley College for a second-round game on Wednesday (Nov. 22) at 7 p.m.

Antelope Valley also needed penalty kicks to knock off No. 2-seeded Oxnard College on Saturday. AVC and Oxnard played to a 3-3 tie with the Marauders winning in PKs, 5-4.

Rio Hondo and Antelope Valley will meet for the first time this season. The winner of Wednesday's game advances to Round 3 to take on either No. 1 El Camino College or No. 8 Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday (Nov. 25).

Two more wins are needed by the Roadrunners to advance to the 3C2A State Championships on Dec. 1 & 3 at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
