Men’s Soccer: No. 14 Rio Hondo knocks off No. 1 El Camino, 4-1

The Rio Hondo College men's soccer team has made it be known the Roadrunners will be a threat in the upcoming postseason. Facing its biggest challenge so far, No. 14 state-ranked Rio Hondo handed No. 1 El Camino College its first loss of the season, a 4-1 defeat in Torrance on Friday.

El Camino earned the state's top ranking for the first time this week after winning its first 10 games of the season. After a tie last Friday, Rio Hondo is unbeaten in its last five games. The Roadrunners improved to 8-1-2 overall and 2-0 in South Coast Conference play.

After a scoreless first half, Rio Hondo got goals from for different Roadrunners in an offensive final 45 minutes. Maximilian De Anda scored first for Rio Hondo, as he knocked in a free kick from outside the box past El Camino goalkeeper Luis Garibay in the 48th minute.

Adan Villarreal and Juan Rodriguez extended the Rio Hondo lead to 3-0 thanks to their goals in the 53rd and 58th minutes. The Warriors finally broke up the shutout, getting a goal from Eli Ristovski in the 62nd minute. And the Roadrunners' Sebastian Sandoval closed out the scoring, getting the final goal in the 85th minute to complete the rout.

Arturo Bustamante was solid in goal for the Roadrunners. El Camino outshot Rio Hondo by a 13-9 margin, but Bustamante came up with five saves.

The Roadrunners return to SCC action on Tuesday (Oct. 12) when they host Long Beach City College in a 4 p.m. match.
