Roadrunners battle for first win, 15-14 at Pasadena
PASADENA – Katherine Galindo's goal with 3:19 remaining in the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winner for Rio Hondo College in a thrilling 15-14 South Coast Conference victory at Pasadena City College on Wednesday.
Both squads were in search of their first win of the season but the Roadrunners were able to come out on top of a match that saw the score tied 11 times.
Rio Hondo trailed 5-4 at the end of the first quarter but opened the second with a pair of goals by Lacy Claburn and another by Emily Narvaez. PCC towards the end of the period to break the scoring run but the Roadrunners went into the break with a narrow 7-6 advantage.
Galino scored the first of her 6 goals in the second half near the start of the third quarter to increase the Rio Hondo lead to 8-6. But PCC (0-10, 0-6 SCC) responded with three straight goals to go back out in front 9-8.
Galindo scored at the 3:03 mark to tie up the game before the Lancers scored with 2:45 to go and retake the lead. Galindo threw in her third goal of the quarter and Rosa Coronel tallied a goal with 36 seconds remaining to send the Roadrunners into the final period with an 11-10 advantage.
The squads battled in the fourth. With 6:02 to go, Pasadena got a goal from Marissa Granados to tie it up one final time. Narvaez scored with 5:46 to play and Galindo got her final goal to close out the scoring for the Roadrunners.
PCC got a final goal from Daisy Reynoso with 1:04 left and nearly got another but a shot Emily Padilla hit the crossbar with 23 seconds remaining.
Galindo led Rio Hondo with 6 goals and 4 assists. Claburn both Narvaez had 4 goals each and Coronel tallied a single goal.
Rio Hondo goalie Audrea Garcia totaled 8 saves for the win.
The Roadrunners moved to 1-5 overall and in South Coast Conference play. Rio Hondo closes out the regular season next Wednesday (Oct. 30) when it hosts East Los Angeles College in a 3 p.m. SCC game.
