Women’s Water Polo: Rio Hondo falls in 7th place game at SCC tourney

It was a tough way to end the season for the Rio Hondo College women's water polo team. The Roadrunners wrapped up the 2019 schedule with three losses at the South Coast Conference Championships.

On Friday, Rio Hondo fell to Mt. San Antonio by a final score of 20-6 and dropped a 10-4 contest to Chaffey College. The event at Cerritos College concluded with a closer 10-7 loss to El Camino College on Saturday.

June Babishoff closed out her freshman season by scoring seven goals while adding five assists over the three-game tourney. She led the Roadrunners with 72 goals this season, ranking third in the South Coast Conference.

Babishoff had two goals and two assists in the loss to Mt. SAC. Rio Hondo also got goals from Jacinda Cifuentes, Kharena Garcia, and Ivania Moreno. Emily Amezcua made 15 saves in goal.

Babishoff once again led the Roadrunners on offense, scoring three of Rio Hondo's four goals against Chaffey. Raylene Sanchez tallied the other goal while Amezcua posted 10 saves.

In the seventh-place game against El Camino, the Warriors opened the contest outscoring Rio Hondo 7-0 in the first quarter. Babishoff and Sanchez scored second-quarter goals to send the Roadrunners into halftime trailing 7-2.

Cifuentes scored three goals in the third followed by Sanchez' second goal of the game to get Rio Hondo within two goals at 8-6 six heading into the fourth. But the Warriors extended their lead to 10-6 after a pair of goals to open the fourth. Babishoff scored with 1:35 left in the game to close out the scoring for the Roadrunners.

Amezcua totaled 12 saves in the loss. She closed the regular season by leading the South Coast Conference with 219 saves. Amezcua's 57.5 save percentage ranked second.

Rio Hondo ended the season with a 4-23 overall record and went 1-8 in conference play.
