Women's Water Polo: Rio Hondo goes 2-2 at Saddleback tournament

The Rio Hondo College women's water polo team picked up a pair of wins out of four games over the weekend while competing at its first tournament of the season. The Roadrunners cruised to a 22-6 victory over Southwestern College and defeated East Los Angeles College 18-3 at the two-day Saddleback College Tournament in Mission Viejo.

With the split, Rio Hondo improved its record to 2-3 overall.

The Roadrunners had the tough task of taking on Fullerton College to open the tournament on Friday. The Hornets were too much for Rio Hondo as the Roadrunners lost by a final score of 28-12. Emily Mena led Rio Hondo with four goals in the loss while Quinn Reynoso added three goals.

The Roadrunners bounced back with a big win of its own, a 22-6 rout of Southwestern. Rio Hondo built a 7-1 lead after one quarter and was never threatened. Mena once again led Rio Hondo with seven goals. RHC also got four goals each from Maree Carney and Sabrina Quevedo.

Rio Hondo kept the momentum going on Saturday morning as the Roadrunners rolled to the 18-3 victory against East Los Angeles. RHC was up 5-1 after one quarter and held a commanding 11-1 advantage at halftime. Mena matched her tournament high with seven goals in the win over ELAC while Quevedo and Elizabeth Fuentes chipped in with two goals each.

The Roadrunners had their short win streak come to an end with a 14-6 loss to host Saddleback. Rio Hondo was down by two at halftime, trailing 7-5, before Saddleback held the Roadrunners to just one goal in the second half. Mena and Reynoso both scored twice to lead the Roadrunners.

Mena had a huge weekend for the Roadrunners as she totaled 20 goals over four games.

Rio Hondo returns to action on Wednesday (Sep. 14) when the Roadrunners travel to Mt. San Antonio College for a 3 p.m. South Coast Conference game.
