Women’s Volleyball: Roadrunners close week with wins over Cerritos, No. 10 Pasadena

WHITTIER – The Rio Hondo College women's volleyball team surged to its third straight win after picking up a pair of South Coast Conference victories during the week. The Roadrunners opened up SCC play with a 3-1 win at Cerritos College on Wednesday and followed that with a 3-1 upset of No. 10 state-ranked Pasadena City College on Friday.

After dropping its first two matches of the season, Rio Hondo has won seven of its last eight to improve to 7-3 overall. The Roadrunners were ranked just outside of the state's top-25 last week and should re-enter next week's poll.

Rio Hondo had a huge match offensively at Cerritos, posting a season-high 60 kills to overwhelm the Falcons in the 18-25, 23-25, 26-24, 22-25 win. Maria Bejines led the way with 19 kills, Jayleen Garcia had 12, Jade Fuentes posted 11, and Loren Forster added 9.

Madison Mader posted 26 assists while Carly Kejmar had 20. Jaida Zuniga led all with 23 digs.

After dropping the opening set to Pasadena on Friday, Rio Hondo once again rallied to win the final three  by scores of 23-25, 27-25, 25-23, 26-24 to shock the Lancers.

Bejines had another huge match, leading Rio Hondo with both 22 kills and 25 digs. Fuentes, Mader, and Garcia all chipped in with 6 kills each. Zuniga posted 21 digs while Jacqueline Torres contributed 6 total blocks.

The Roadrunners will look to keep the momentum going on Wednesday (Sep. 20) when they travel to Los Angeles City College for a 6 p.m. conference match.
