Women’s Volleyball: Roadrunners return home to sweep Antelope Valley

Rio Hondo College bounced back from a pair of opening-day losses by cruising to a 3-0 win over visiting  Antelope Valley College on Wednesday in its home opener. The Roadrunners rolled to the sweep by scores of 25-10, 25-9, and 25-19 for their first win of 2021.

The Roadrunners compiled an impressive .304 hitting percentage for the match, totaling 41 kills with just 13 errors. Rio Hondo used a balance attack on offense as Faith Lee (10 kills), Ariel Garcia (9 kills), Alina Velo (8 kills), and Desteny Hernandez (6 kills) all played key roles.

The defense also did its part with 58 digs as Antelope Valley managed just 12 kills. Daniela Sanchez led Rio Hondo with 16 digs, while Nadine Oronoz (12 digs), and Faith Wada (10 digs) all contributed. Wada added a match-high 35 assists while Oronoz served up four assists.

The Roadrunners, now 1-2 overall, will look for their first win on the road as they travel to Fullerton College on Friday (Sep. 3) to take on a pair of Orange Empire Conference squads. Rio Hondo faces host Fullerton at 11 a.m. and will play Riverside City College in a 1 p.m. contest.
