Women’s Volleyball: Roadrunners season ends with playoff loss, Esko named SCC Coach of the Year to top list of 5 honorees

An impressive 2019 Rio Hondo College women's volleyball season to close following the Roadrunners' 3-1 loss to visiting San Diego City College in a Play-in Round match of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. SDCC, the No. 18 seed, won the match over No. 15 Rio Hondo by scores of 25-17, 25-20, 20-25, and 25-18.

The Roadrunners made their first postseason appearance since 2012 after finishing in third place at the South Coast Conference Championship tournament. Rio Hondo ended the season with a 15-12 overall record and went 9-8 in conference play.

Rio Hondo got off to one of its best starts in program history, winning six of its first seven matches. The competitive play of the Roadrunners didn't go unnoticed as 16th year head coach Teddi Esko was named the South Coast Conference Coach of the Year for the first time.

The Roadrunners went on to earn four more postseason conference honors. Sophomore setter Aliah Trujillo and sophomore libero Janine Coria were both first-team All-SCC selections while sophomore middle blocker Danielle Betancourt and sophomore outside hitter Nicole Vasquez earned second-team honors.

Trujillo ranked third in the SCC in 2019 with 8.16 assists per set and 751 total assists. Her 64 aces also ranked second in the conference. Coria was also among SCC leads in digs, ranking fourth with 3.65 digs per set and 350 total digs.

Betancourt totaled 40 blocks and 176 kills while Vasquez led Rio Hondo with 199 kills to go along with 202 digs and 54 aces.
