Women’s Volleyball: Rio Hondo drops conference opener at Pasadena

Rio Hondo College sophomore Nicole Vasquez totaled a team-high eight kills but the Roadrunners had a tough time containing the No. 11 state-ranked Pasadena City College offense and lost 3-0 in both teams' South Coast Conference opener on Wednesday.

Pasadena swept the contest by scores of 25-12, 25-23, and 25-20 to improve to 10-2. Since opening the season winning six of seven matches, the Roadrunners had dropped three straight to fall to 6-4 overall.

PCC was nearly perfect in the opening set, hitting an amazing .455 while committing just one error in the 13-point win. Rio Hondo almost stole Set 2 and was within one point of the Lancers late at 22-21, 23-22, and 24-23. And in the third, the Roadrunners took an early 7-5 advantage before Pasadena put together a 10-3 run to jump ahead for good.

On offense, Danielle Betancourt and Katherina O'Brien both had four kills each. Janie Coria had a team-best 13 digs while Aliah Trujillo posted 19 assists, six digs, and two aces.

The Roadrunners will look to halt their three-match slide on Friday (Sep. 27) when they host No. 25 state-ranked Long Beach City College in a 6 p.m. conference match.
