Women’s Volleyball: Roadrunners split matches at Orange Coast

Rio Hondo College continued its good start to the 2019 season, cruising to a 3-0 win over Glendale Community College before dropping a tough 3-0 match to host Orange Coast College on Friday in Costa Mesa.

Sophomore Danielle Betancourt was impressive on offense for the Roadrunners as she totaled 14 kills against her two opponents.

Rio Hondo opened the day with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-9 win over Glendale. The Roadrunners were nearly perfect in the third set, making just three error while compiling a .423 hitting percentage.

Betancourt led with seven kills in the win. Mara Sanchez had six kills while Nicole Vasquez and Alina Velo both added five kills. Vasquez had team-highs of 17 digs and four aces and Aliah Trujillo led the Roadrunners with 22 assists.

The 25-22, 25-19, 25-10 loss to Orange Coast was much closer than the final score of 3-0 would indicate. Rio Hondo was edged by two points in the opener, stayed close in the second, before running out of gas in the third.

Betancourt was once again busy up front, leading the Roadrunners with seven kills. Janine Coria had a team-high 10 digs while Trujillo added 14 assists and three aces. Vania Maciel contributed five kills and Vasquez posted four kills and five digs.

Rio Hondo, now 2-1 overall, will host Fullerton College in its home opener on Wednesday (Sep. 4) at 6 p.m.
