Women’s Volleyball: Coria, Betancourt named All-South Coast Conference

Following the close of the 2018 season, a pair of freshmen Rio Hondo College women's volleyball players earned postseason honors as libero Janine Coria and middle blocker Danielle Betancourt were named All-South Coast Conference North Division.

"Janine and Danielle were key contributors this season," said Rio Hondo head coach Tedi Esko. "Each match they brought great consistency and competitiveness. Their SCC honors are well deserved."

Coria was a first-team All-SCC North Division selection after leading Rio Hondo with 259 digs while averaging 3.3 digs per set. She was also third on the squad with 17 service aces and contributed 41 assists on the season.

"Janine was our starting Libero all season and her ball control in serve reception and scrappy defensive set the tone for our team," said Esko.

Coria turned in double-digit digs in 14 matches this season, including an impressive five-match stretch early in the season when she averaged nearly 18 per match. She posted back-to-back matches with 19 digs against San Diego City and San Diego Mesa.

Betancourt was also a standout for the Roadrunners in her first season. She was Rio Hondo's primary threat on offense as she led the Roadrunners in kills (102), kills per set (1.3), and blocks (38).

"Danielle was a fire power in the middle," said Esko. "She did a fantastic job terminating the ball and was a solid first line of defense at the net."

Her best match of the season came in a five-set win against Cerritos as she totaled a season-high 13 kills to go with 4 blocks. She also put up 11 kills and 4 blocks in the Roadrunners' season-finale at East Los Angeles.

The Roadrunners ended the year with a 6-17 overall record and went 1-7 in South Coast Conference North Division play.
