Women's Volleyball: Newton's 19 kills leads Rio Hondo to win at Cerritos

Rio Hondo College sophomore Bree Newton slammed down a career-high 19 kills to help lead the Roadrunners to a 3-1 win at Cerritos College on Wednesday night. After dropping the opening set to the Falcons 22-25, Rio Hondo closed out the victory by taking the final three 26-24, 25-16, and 25-16.

The South Coast Conference interdivision victory extended the Roadrunners' winning streak to three and improved their overall record to 6-8.

Rio Hondo nearly found itself in a two-set deficit to the winless Falcons (0-11) as the second set was tied 10 times until Cerritos opened a 23-20. Cerritos was up 24-21 with set point, but the Roadrunners took advantage of a pair of Falcon attack errors and then slammed home the final three points to even the match.

After the impressive comeback, momentum was clearly on the Roadrunners' side. They trailed just twice over the final two sets as Newton took over, leading Rio Hondo to a season-high 54 combined kills as a team. Victoria Martinez and Michelle Rosas both had eight kills with Andrea Sanchez posted seven kills.

Sanchez added five blocks at the net while Michell Chavez-Valdivia added three blocks to go with five kills. Natalie Magallon led the Roadrunners with 16 digs while Mia Torres' 23 assists and Martinez' 20 assists paced the offense.

Rio Hondo will look to keep its win streak intact on Friday (Sept. 29), but will host a tough No. 5 state-ranked El Camino College squad in a SCC crossover match that begins at 6 p.m.
