Women's Volleyball: Rio Hondo knocks off No. 20 San Diego Mesa

Rio Hondo College women's volleyball head coach Teddi Esko has always instilled a never-quit attitude with her Roadrunner squads. And that trait was in full display on Wednesday night at San Diego Mesa College. Trailing 2-1, Rio Hondo rallied to take Set 4 and 5 to complete an amazing 3-2 come-from-behind win over the No. 20 state-ranked Olympians.

Rio Hondo won the opener 25-21 before San Diego Mesa took Set 2 and 3 by scores of 25-20 and 25-22. But the Roadrunners fought off defeat with a 25-20 triumph in the fourth and completed the comeback by winning 15-12 in the final set.

The win snapped a three-match losing streak for Rio Hondo and improved their overall record to 4-8.

Sophomore Bree Newton was the big hitter for the Roadrunners as she collected a team-best 10 kills. She also added 10 digs and five blocks.

Stephanie Garcia paced the Rio Hondo back line with 13 digs while Victoria Martinez led the squad with eight assists and three aces.

Tonight's contest was Rio Hondo's final tune up before opening South Coast Conference play. The Roadrunners are up next against LA Harbor, hosting the Seahawks on Friday (Sept. 22) at 6 p.m. in a SCC interdivision match.
