Women's Volleyball: Esko gets career win No. 100 with sweep of Cerritos

Wednesday night's sweep of new South Coast Conference rival Cerritos College was more than just an ordinary win for the Rio Hondo College women's volleyball program. The Roadrunners have played well of late, winning four of its last five matches. But head coach Teddi Esko can check off a milestone from her list as she earned her 100th career victory at the college.

A coach can't reach those achievements without her players. On Wednesday, the Roadrunners used a balance attack to earn its fourth three-set win of the season. Rio Hondo cruised to 25-16 victories in Set 1 and 2 before being pushed to a 26-24 win in the third to close out the match.

Eight players had kills for Rio Hondo in the win with Erika Mendoza leading the charge with eight. Mendoza hit an impressive .467 on the night, committing just one error on 15 attempts.

Bree Newton added six kills, followed by Michelle Rosas with five kills and Michelle Hawkins with four kills. Setter Haley Brownwood also had a good night with 12 assists, five aces, three kills, and two digs. Rachel Bustillos also served up five aces while Jacqueline Chaidez led Rio Hondo with six digs.

Jasmine McNeal led Cerritos (7-10 overall) with nine kills.

Rio Hondo, now 9-7 overall, returns to action on Friday (Oct. 21) when the Roadrunners travel to No. 10 state-ranked El Camino College for a 6 p.m. SCC interdivision match.
