Women's Volleyball: Rio Hondo rolls to conference sweep of Chaffey

Rio Hondo College sophomore Paula Alferez totaled nine kills, six digs, and four aces to help lead the Roadrunners to a 3-0 sweep at Chaffey College on Friday. Rio Hondo won the South Coast Conference North Division match by scores of 25-17, 25-22, and 25-14 to improve to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Rio Hondo totaled 43 kills in the short three-set match and combined for a .322 attack percentage. Contributing to the efficient night was freshman Michelle Rosas who hit .600 thanks to nine kills on 15 attempts with no errors. Also in on the attack was freshman Bree Newton with eight kills while freshmen Aaliyah Evis and Michelle Hawkins both contributed six kills.

The Roadrunners totaled 41 assists for the match with sophomore Tanya Metchkoff leading the way with 20 assists to go along with three aces. Sophomore Carleigh Cruz led the Roadrunners' back line with a match-high 11 digs.

With the loss, Chaffey fell to 1-13 overall and 0-3 in conference play. Faith Quezada had five blocks and four kills to lead the Panthers.

Rio Hondo, winner of two straight and six of its last eight, returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 5) when the Roadrunners host No. 17 state-ranked Mt. San Antonio College in a 6 p.m. SCC North Division match.
