Women’s Tennis: Roadrunners fall in season opener to Riverside

The 2019 Rio Hondo College women's tennis season got off a rocky start as the Roadrunners suffered a 9-0 loss to visiting Riverside City College on Thursday.

Rio Hondo head coach Karen Unger will rely heavily on freshman this season with just three returning sophomores on her 2019 roster.

Jane Quach and Valarie Flores are back from last season while Jessica Esquivel last played in 2017 as a freshman for the Roadrunners.

Quach at No. 1 singles dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Riverside's Torrey Mateljan while freshman Jesielle Valles put up the biggest fight in a 6-2, 6-2 loss to RCC's Heather Graff at No. 2

Quach and Valles teamed up at No. 1 doubles and fell 8-2 to Mateljan and Maxelle Bernie. At No. 2 doubles, Flores and Gabriella Tellez put up two points in an 8-2 loss to the RCC duo of Graf and Yasmin Johnson. Complete results from the match are below.

Rio Hondo (0-1) returns to action on Tuesday (Feb. 12) when the Roadrunners host Cypress College in a 2 p.m. non-conference match.
